About Jenn
Hi! I’m Jenn (with 2ns). Well technically my “fancy” name is Jennifer Wyatt Bourgeois, Ph.D, and I have a passion for social justice, criminal justice reform, and wellness. I also teach yoga through a trauma-informed lens at a women’s residential treatment facility. I was first introduced to yoga in 2014 when I started my fitness journey while training for a half marathon, and as a way to deal with grief. When I’m not on my yoga mat, I enjoy data analysis, reading, writing, and traveling. I bring my contagious smile, positive energy, and passion for an inclusive yoga environment to each yoga class I teach. To learn more about me and my random shenanigans, check out my Blog!
Social Impact
I have benefited greatly from my yoga and wellness practice in the form of stress relief and mental clarity. In addition to the many health benefits that yoga provides, I discovered the unity and community yoga creates when it’s shared with a group of people. As a result, I wanted to share the practice with others.
Oftentimes, incarcerated individuals are excluded from the conversation about mental wellbeing and mindfulness practices . My experience working in the criminal justice field made me conscious of the lack of accessibility incarcerated individuals have to wellness resources such as yoga to improve physical and mental health wellbeing.
With the assistance of Prison Yoga Project and the donation of yoga mats from Gaiam Yoga and lululemon through Give Back Yoga Foundation, I began teaching yoga through a trauma-informed lens to incarcerated pregnant and postpartum women at a residential treatment facility in the Houston area. My goal is to continue to provide free yoga services to individuals in my community who would likely never see the inside of a yoga studio.
